Employment and Working Conditions on the Microtasks Platforms
In this article, we present a brief survey of employment via microtasks platforms. The main issues we review are the following: the economic rationale of these platforms; the estimation of the level of this type of employment; and the profile and working conditions of these workers. We close the article with a discussion of social challenges in this new type of employment.

Miguel Ángel Malo gained a doctorate in Economics at the University of Alcalá in 1996 and, since 1997, has been Professor of Economics at the University of Salamanca. During 2013 he worked as Senior Economist in the Research Department of the International Labour Organization (ILO), in Geneva (Switzerland). His speciality is labour economics. His principal lines of research are: analysis of labour reforms, non-standard employment, and the employment of people with disabilities. He has been visiting researcher at ILO and NBER, among other institutions. From 2007 until 2009 he was President of the Spanish Association for Labour Economics (Asociación Española de Economía del Trabajo). He has acted as a consultant on various occasions for the Spanish Ministry of Labour, the European Commission and ILO.
Javier Sánchez Santos is a graduate in Economics from the University of Salamanca and holds a master’s in Applied Economic Analysis from the University of Alcalá. He has conducted research relating to employment on digital platforms and the influence of economic conditions in the vote for non-traditional and populist parties at the municipal level.
