Diversity and inclusion as a source of value: an approach from the perspective of functional diversity
Diversity and inclusion remain issues in the agendas of today’s organizations. Despite significant advances in managing workforce differences, there are still challenges to face in order to truly achieve fully inclusive organizations. Diversity management is set up as the key success factor in recognizing and integrating employee differences, so it is particularly relevant for companies to become aware of the need to improve their management capability in this area. This article provides a literature review of the terms diversity and inclusion, the analysis of the main effects they have and their management and the specific case study of functional diversity. A conclusion section is provided in the last section of the article.

Full professor in the Department of Business Organization at the University of Cadiz (UCA). Her research interests focus on the diversity of human capital of higher management teams, formulating human resource strategies, managing intellectual capital in academia and social capital and complex research networks. She defended her doctoral thesis in 2013 and earned the cum laude qualification and the mention of European PhD. She has completed a research stay at Kingston University in London as a visiting professor and currently leads four doctoral theses and a research project obtained in competitive call. The results of her research over these years have been published in high-impact journals such as Journal of Intellectual Capital, Research Policy or European Management Journal.
She holds a PhD in Business Organization from the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC, 2009) and a Bachelor of Science in Market Research and Techniques from the University of Barcelona (UB, 1999). In 1996, she received a scholarship from the UB to study for one year at La Trobe University (Australia). She is accredited by the National Agency for Quality Assessment and Accreditation (ANECA) as a contracted doctoral teacher. Since 2000, she has been working as a business creation technician at Barcelona Activa and later at the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB) for ten years. In 2015, she was co-chair of the Chair of Responsible Tourism and Hospitality at Ramon Llull University (URL), and until July 2020 she was a teacher at the School of Tourism. She also led social innovation research projects with companies and entities such as Vueling, Aena, TMB, Ferrocarriles de la Generalitat de Cataluña, CosmoCaixa, the Barcelona Provincial Council, the Girona Provincial Council and the Gran Teatro del Liceo de Barcelona, among others. She is currently a professor at the Studies of Economics and Business, where she develops teaching in marketing, organization of companies and tourism. She has been a member of the i2TIC-UOC research group since 2010; she has been intern professor in 2005 and a consultant in the subject of Business Creation since 2010. Her research scope is inclusive design and co-creation of inclusive experiences for people with disabilities and she has published in various high-impact international journals related to functional diversity.
